Grafton Architects was selected as the winning firm to design the Anthony Timberlands Center for Design and Materials Innovation at the University of Arkansas in collaboration with Modus Studio for the planned campus design research center.
When complete, this project will mark the first completed in the US for Dublin firm Grafton Architects, led by 2020 Pritzker Prize winners Yvonne Farrell and Shelley McNamara.
The design comprises a timber construction left exposed inside with a zig-zagging roofline that staggers down from approximately six stories at its highest height to one level in the rear.
The basic idea of the new Anthony Timberlands Center is that the building itself is a story book of timber, able to be used as a teaching tool. It will be used for timber and wood design initiatives and will serve as the home for a new graduate programme in timber and wood design and house the school's design-build programme and fabrication technologies laboratories.
